After The Massacre
News about Kent State shooting shocked the U.S. These reports of the shooting expanded by live television, front covers of magazines and newspapers, fliers/posters, radio broadcasts, announcements, poems, and music. The school was closed for the rest of the semester, as were hundreds of other colleges across the country.
Awards like Pulitzer Prize were giving for photographers that held enduring images of this event. As for the guardsmen who were responsible for killing 4 students because they claimed they did shot fire in order of self-defense, testifying that the protesters advanced them in a threatening way that caused them to fire. Their case on court in the federal trial was closed since their was weak cases against the guardsmen.
Responses of President Nixon for the tragedy at Kent State was "When dissent turns to violence, it invites tragedy,". And also he somewhat blamed the protesters for provoking the guardsmen to attack.
